Khon Kaen

Khon Kaen is the commercial and political center of Northeastern Thailand and is well known for the high quality silk that is produced in the province. Located in the heart of Isan, Thailand’s northeast region, Khon Kaen has been one of the fastest growing areas in Thailand. The Thai government nominated Khon Kaen as the export center for trade throughout the Indo-China Region and both Laos and Vietnam have consulates in Khon Kaen to process visa applications.


Attractive Places


Ubol Ratana Dam
Built across the Phong River to Phu Kao and Phu Phan mountains, Ubolratana Dam is the largest multi-purpose dam in the Northeast. With the magnificent view, the attraction is one of the perfect spot for tourists and locals to indulge the natural beauty together with local made grilled food available at the site.
Kaennakorn Lake
Kaennakorn Lake is located at Khon Khan Town Municipality. It is a large lake in the area of 603 Rais. Not only is the place of enshrined monument of “Chao Pia Mueang Pan” who was the founder of Khon Khan, but also is the place for recreation of many townspeople due to its relaxing surroundings. The area around the lake was renovated as a health park furnished with various beautiful sculptures. Moreover, the town municipalities also grow the golden shower and dwarf to give a shade for tourists. Furthermore, playground and many kinds of food stores are provided here which is suitable for family’s holiday.
Pra That Kham Kaen
Located in the area of wat Chetiyaphum, Phrathat Kham Kaen is believed to be the origin of Khon Kaen City which the Phrathat itself can be dated back in 20the century A.D. According to the local myth, it was told that King of the Mori town in Khmer Kingdom 9 senior monks to bring relics of the Lord Buddha to be placed in Phrathat Phanom. On the way, the caravan spent a night camping here by the heartwood of a dead tamarind tree. The caravan reached Nakhon Phanom on the next day just to learn that Phrathat Phanom had already been completed, so they returned on the same route with a wish to place the relics at their hometown instead. On the way back, they were surprised to find the dead tamarind tree were blooming once again. So, they decided to build a Phrathat here and placed the relics and Buddha images inside, naming Phrathat Kham Kaen which means the stupa of tamarind heartwood.

Si Wiang Dinosaur Park
The Si Wiang Dinosaur Park is another well-known tourist attraction of Khon Kaen Province. The park features various spot for relaxation, including a health garden, waterfall, pond, and playground and over hundred statues of dinosaurs which some can even move and make sound like real dinosaurs once a coin is inserted into the machine. These statues represent fossils of the dinosaurs discovered in the northeastern region of Thailand.
